How Love Story Brought Back the New York City I Fell in Love With

There are certain versions of New York City that only exist in memory.

For some people, it's the Studio 54 era. For others, it's the gritty 1970s that filled movies like Taxi Driver

For me, it's New York in the 1990s. Before I called Manhattan home and long before I could walk from Flatiron to SoHo without looking at a map. It was the city I visited as a wide-eyed Detroiter.

And watching FX's Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette felt like stepping into a time machine.

According to a recent interview with the show's production team, recreating 1990s New York wasn't as simple as putting actors in vintage clothing. Entire neighborhoods, storefronts, streetscapes, and interiors had to be carefully rebuilt to capture a version of Manhattan that no longer exists. Modern bike lanes disappeared. Contemporary signage vanished. Vintage newspaper boxes, parking meters, and period details were brought back to life.

What struck me most wasn't the accuracy. It was the feeling.  Because New York in the 1990s felt different.

The skyline was different.

The Twin Towers still anchored Lower Manhattan.

There were fewer luxury condos. Fewer glass towers. Less branding. Less noise competing for your attention. You could disappear into a neighborhood and feel like you'd discovered something secret.

The city felt more mysterious.

Back then, JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette represented a version of New York that seemed impossibly cool. They weren't influencers. They weren't posting selfies. They weren't building personal brands. They simply existed. And somehow that made them larger than life.

The production designers behind Love Story understood that. Rather than recreating a gritty tabloid version of New York, they focused on the quieter details: minimalist apartments, Calvin Klein aesthetics, industrial lofts, understated restaurants, and the muted color palette that defined so much of Manhattan style during that decade. The result is a city that feels romantic.  Romantic because it feels lost.

As someone who spent years producing television, I know how difficult period productions can be. The audience only notices the details when they're wrong. When they're right, the world simply feels authentic. That's what Love Story accomplishes. It reminds us that New York itself was once a character.

Watching the series brought me back to my first trips into Manhattan. I remember arriving with a sense that anything could happen. Every neighborhood felt cinematic. Every coffee shop felt like it might be filled with artists, writers, television producers, or future celebrities.  Maybe that's my nostalgia talking or maybe New York really was a little more magical before everyone carried a camera in their pocket.

Today, I spend my days helping buyers and sellers navigate a very different city. The Manhattan of 2026 is cleaner, wealthier, more polished, and more expensive than the one portrayed in Love Story. Yet traces of that old New York remain. You can still find them on quiet blocks in Tribeca. In certain corners of SoHo. In hidden restaurants that somehow survived decades of change. In prewar apartments where the floors creak just enough to remind you of the people who came before.  That's one of the reasons I loved this series so much.

I love John and Carolyn's 'Love Story' but I also love this version of New York that shaped an entire generation's imagination.  For those of us who were lucky enough to experience even a small piece of it, seeing it recreated on screen feels like coming home.

Thinking about making Manhattan your home today?

The city has changed dramatically since the 1990s, but the neighborhoods, architecture, and stories that made people fall in love with New York are still here. If you're looking to buy, sell, or simply explore what makes Manhattan special, I'd love to help you discover it.
